The Affenpinscher, whose name translates from German as 'monkey-like terrier,' is an ancient toy breed developed in Germany as early as the 17th century primarily to hunt and dispatch rats in homes and stables. Despite its small stature, the breed possesses a bold, confident, and sometimes mischievous personality, earning it the French nickname 'diablotin moustachu' or 'moustached little devil.' The breed is distinguished by its dense, rough-textured coat, prominent brow ridge, and expressive dark eyes that contribute to its distinctly simian facial appearance.
