The American Eskimo Dog, descended from European spitz-type dogs brought to the United States by German immigrants in the nineteenth century, was originally known as the American Spitz before being renamed after World War I. Bred in three size varieties—toy, miniature, and standard—the breed is renowned for its striking white coat, bright dark eyes, and agile, athletic build. Highly intelligent and eager to please, American Eskimo Dogs excel in obedience and agility and form deeply affectionate bonds with their families, though they can be reserved toward strangers.
