American Foxhound

One of America's oldest native breeds, the American Foxhound was developed in the colonial era from English Foxhounds imported in the seventeenth century, with George Washington himself among its early breeders. Built for endurance and speed in open-country fox hunting, the breed possesses a lean, muscular frame, a melodious voice, and an extraordinary sense of smell. While gentle and affectionate with family, American Foxhounds retain a strong independent streak and powerful prey drive that can make obedience training a challenge.
