The Australian Terrier, developed in Australia during the nineteenth century from a mix of British terrier breeds including the Dandie Dinmont, Skye, and Yorkshire Terriers, was bred to control vermin and guard mines and homesteads in rugged terrain. It holds the distinction of being the first breed developed and recognized in Australia. Compact and sturdy with a harsh, weather-resistant double coat, the Australian Terrier is self-confident, spirited, and deeply devoted to its family while retaining the tenacious, alert nature characteristic of working terriers.
