The Azawakh is an ancient West African sighthound that has been bred for thousands of years by the nomadic Tuareg and other Sahelian peoples of the southern Sahara and Sahel regions as a companion, hunter, and guardian of livestock. Distinguished by its extraordinarily lean, almost skeletal build, long legs, and short, fine coat, the Azawakh is built for explosive speed in hot, arid conditions. Reserved and often aloof with strangers, the breed forms intensely loyal and affectionate bonds with its chosen family and displays a strong protective instinct uncommon among sighthounds.
