The Dachshund is a German scent hound developed as early as the 15th century to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals, with its elongated body and short, powerful legs perfectly adapted for pursuing quarry underground. The breed is produced in two sizes—Standard (16–32 lbs) and Miniature (under 11 lbs)—and three coat varieties: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. Despite its small stature, the Dachshund possesses a bold, tenacious character and an endearing curiosity that has made it one of the most popular companion breeds worldwide.
