The Havanese is Cuba's national dog and the only breed native to that country, descended from the now-extinct Blanquito de la Habana and related Bichon-type breeds brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers. Bred as a companion dog for Cuban aristocracy, the Havanese is celebrated for its cheerful, outgoing temperament and its strong bond with family members of all ages. Its long, silky double coat — which can be corded or left flowing — combined with its expressive dark eyes and springy gait give the breed a distinctive and charming appearance.
