The Lakeland Terrier originated in the Lake District of England, where it was bred to hunt and kill foxes that threatened lambs during the lambing season, often going to ground in rocky hillside terrain. One of the oldest terrier breeds still in existence, the Lakeland is a sturdy, compact dog with a hard, wiry double coat and a characteristically narrow body that allows it to squeeze through rocky crevices. Bold and confident with a friendly, outgoing temperament, the Lakeland Terrier combines the tenacity and independence of a working terrier with a surprisingly affectionate nature toward its family.
