The Miniature Schnauzer was developed in Germany in the mid-to-late 19th century by crossing the Standard Schnauzer with smaller breeds such as the Affenpinscher and possibly the Poodle, originally bred to serve as a small farm ratter and watchdog. It is the most popular of the three Schnauzer breeds, celebrated for its distinctive bushy eyebrows, bristly mustache, and wiry double coat that comes in salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black. Energetic, spirited, and highly trainable, the Miniature Schnauzer excels in obedience and agility competitions and makes an adaptable, affectionate family companion.
