The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is an ancient Dutch sporting breed, depicted in paintings by Rembrandt and Jan Steen as far back as the 16th and 17th centuries, originally used to lure ducks into cage traps called "eendenkooi" by enticing them with its distinctive bushy, white-tipped tail. After nearly going extinct in the mid-20th century, the breed was revived in the Netherlands through dedicated breeding programs and was recognized by the AKC in 2018. Cheerful, lively, and moderately active, the Kooikerhondje is a versatile companion dog with a silky orange-red and white parti-colored coat and characteristic black-tipped ear fringes called "earrings."
