The Otterhound is a large, rough-coated British scent hound of ancient lineage, believed to descend from Bloodhounds, Rough-coated Water Spaniels, and French Griffons, and was specifically bred to hunt otters along riverbanks in medieval England. With the decline of otter hunting and the near extinction of river otters, the breed fell sharply in numbers and is today considered one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. The Otterhound is characterized by its distinctive shaggy double coat, webbed feet, and superb nose, as well as a friendly, boisterous personality that makes it a devoted if somewhat independent companion.
