The Papillon, whose name is the French word for butterfly in reference to its distinctive large, fringed, wing-shaped ears, is one of the oldest toy spaniels, depicted in European paintings as far back as the 16th century. Originally bred as a companion dog for European nobility, the breed has evolved from a drop-eared variety called the Phalène to the erect-eared form most recognized today, though both types are still shown. Despite its elegant, dainty appearance, the Papillon is an exceptionally athletic, intelligent, and trainable breed that excels in agility and obedience competitions.
