The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, or PBGV, is a small French scenthound developed in the Vendée region to hunt small game—particularly rabbit and hare—through the dense, thorny undergrowth of that coastal terrain. Its name describes it precisely: "petit" (small), "basset" (low to the ground), "griffon" (rough-coated), and "Vendéen" (from the Vendée). Cheerful, outgoing, and relentlessly curious, the breed is beloved for its extroverted personality, bushy eyebrows and beard, and its musical, persistent voice on the trail.
