The Russell Terrier, sometimes called the Shorty Jack, was developed in England from the same working terrier stock as the Parson Russell Terrier, selectively bred by Reverend John Russell in the 19th century to create a small, agile earth dog capable of bolting foxes and other quarry from their dens. Distinguished from its taller cousin by its distinctly longer-than-tall body proportions and more compact rectangular build, the Russell Terrier is recognized as a separate breed by the AKC, FCI, and numerous international kennel clubs. Boldly spirited and intensely curious, this tenacious little terrier possesses boundless energy and a sharp mind that demands regular exercise and mental engagement.
