The Schipperke is a small, fox-faced Belgian breed historically used as a watchdog and ratter on canal barges, with its name believed to mean 'little captain' or 'little shepherd' in Flemish dialect. It is an intensely curious, energetic, and confident dog with a mischievous streak, forming strong bonds with its family while remaining naturally suspicious of strangers. The breed is instantly recognizable by its distinctive thick double coat, prominent ruff around the neck, and characteristic tailless or naturally bobbed appearance.
