The Tibetan Spaniel is one of the oldest breeds in existence, originating in the monasteries and villages of Tibet where it served as a cherished companion and watchdog for Buddhist monks. Despite its name, it is not a true spaniel but rather a small, silky-coated breed with a domed head and a plumed tail carried over the back, bearing a resemblance to the Pekingese and other Asian toy breeds. Highly intelligent and somewhat cat-like in independence, Tibetan Spaniels form deep bonds with their families while maintaining a dignified aloofness toward strangers.
