The West Highland White Terrier, affectionately known as the Westie, was developed in Scotland during the 19th century by Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch, who selectively bred white terriers to distinguish them from game in the field. Compact and sturdy with a distinctive bright white double coat, these dogs were originally used to hunt fox, badger, and vermin in the rocky Scottish Highlands. Westies are confident, self-assured, and entertaining companions that combine terrier tenacity and independence with a cheerful, affectionate nature that endears them to families worldwide.
