The Wire Fox Terrier was developed in England in the late 18th century, bred from rough-coated black-and-tan working terriers to bolt foxes from their dens during hunts, and was officially recognized as distinct from the Smooth Fox Terrier by the late 19th century. Distinguished by its dense, wiry, predominantly white coat with tan and black markings, the breed possesses a characteristically keen expression and a V-shaped head that tapers to a strong jaw. Wire Fox Terriers are bold, energetic, and highly animated dogs that have achieved remarkable success in the show ring—winning more Westminster Kennel Club Best in Show titles than any other breed—while remaining lively and curious companions at home.
