The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in the mid-19th century in Yorkshire, England, where weavers from Scotland brought small terrier breeds that were eventually crossed to produce this distinctive toy breed originally used for catching rats in textile mills. Despite its diminutive size, the Yorkie possesses a bold, self-assured personality that is quintessentially terrier, often unaware of its small stature and willing to confront much larger dogs. The breed is renowned for its long, silky, steel-blue and tan coat—a hallmark of the standard—as well as its spirited intelligence and devoted affection toward its family.
